Short Article on ASME B31.3 Exclusions

ASME B31.3 Exclusions

ASME B31.3, the Process Piping Code, provides guidelines for the design, materials, fabrication, erection, inspection, and testing of piping systems in various process plants. However, the code’s scope excludes certain specific piping systems and equipment. These exclusions are as follows:

  1. Low-Pressure, Non-Hazardous Piping Systems: Piping systems with an internal gauge pressure at or above zero but less than 15 psi are excluded from ASME B31.3, provided that the fluid being transported is nonflammable, nontoxic, and not harmful to human tissue. Additionally, the design temperature of these piping systems must fall within the range of -20°F to 366°F.
  2. Power Boilers and Associated Piping: Power boilers designed in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I, along with their external boiler piping that adheres to ASME B31.1, are not covered by ASME B31.3.
  3. Fired Heater Enclosure Piping: Tubes, tube headers, crossovers, and manifolds located within a fired heater enclosure are not within the scope of ASME B31.3.
  4. Fluid Handling and Processing Equipment Piping: Pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and other fluid-handling or processing equipment are excluded from ASME B31.3. This includes both the internal piping of these equipment pieces and the connections for external piping.

These exclusions are in place to ensure that ASME B31.3 focuses on the areas where its guidance is most relevant and to avoid overlap with other applicable codes and standards.
