Short Article on Basics of Globe Valves

Globe Valves

Globe valves are a type of valve that uses a conical plug, which reciprocates into and out of the valve port, to control the flow of fluid. They are characterized by their efficient throttling capabilities, accurate flow control, and availability in multiple ports. Globe valves are ideal for throttling service, as well as shutoff service, in high pressure drop and high temperature applications.

Recommended uses:

  • Throttling service/flow regulation
  • Frequent operation

Applications:

  • Liquids
  • Vapors
  • Gases
  • Corrosive substances
  • Slurries

Advantages:

  • Efficient throttling
  • Accurate flow control
  • Available in multiple ports

Disadvantages:

  • High pressure drop
  • More expensive than other valves

Manual operation is accomplished through a multi-turn hand wheel assembly. Multiturn electric actuators are typically required to automate globe valves, however linear stroke pneumatic and electro-hydraulic actuators are also available.

Globe valves come in three main designs:

  • Globe: The most common type of globe valve. The flow of fluid enters and exits through the same opening in the valve body.
  • Angle: The flow of fluid enters at a 90-degree angle to the exit. This design can reduce turbulence and improve flow control.
  • Y-pattern: The flow of fluid enters and exits through separate openings in the valve body. This design can be used for slurries and other fluids that contain debris.
