Short Article on Types of Corrosion in Piping Systems

Different types of corrosion you mentioned:

General or Uniform Corrosion

General or uniform corrosion is the most common type of corrosion and is characterized by the even loss of metal over the entire surface of the material. This type of corrosion is often caused by exposure to air or water and can be accelerated by factors such as high temperature, humidity, and the presence of contaminants.

Pitting Corrosion

Pitting corrosion is a form of localized corrosion that occurs in small, deep pits on the surface of the material. These pits can penetrate the material and cause significant weakening. Pitting corrosion is often caused by exposure to chloride ions, such as those found in seawater or salt spray.

Galvanic Corrosion

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other in an electrolyte. The more active metal, known as the anode, corrodes and sacrifices itself to protect the more noble metal, known as the cathode. Galvanic corrosion is often accelerated by factors such as the difference in electronegativity between the metals, the conductivity of the electrolyte, and the presence of an oxidizing agent.

Crevice Corrosion

Crevice corrosion is a form of localized corrosion that occurs in crevices or tight spaces where the flow of the electrolyte is restricted. This type of corrosion is often caused by the formation of a concentration cell, where the concentration of dissolved oxygen or ions is different between the inside and outside of the crevice.

Concentration Cell Corrosion

Concentration cell corrosion occurs when two areas of the same metal are exposed to different concentrations of either the corrosive fluid or dissolved oxygen. This type of corrosion is often caused by the presence of stagnant fluid or a difference in the flow velocity of the fluid.

Graphitic Corrosion

Graphitic corrosion is a type of corrosion that occurs in cast iron when it is exposed to salt water or weak acids. This type of corrosion selectively attacks the iron in the cast iron, leaving behind the graphite. The result is a soft, weak material with no significant loss of weight.
